The Terra Collection in Context

Exhibition 2020 in Giverny France, Museum of Impressionisms

From September 12th,2020 to January 3rd,2021

The Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny explores the practice of open air painting by American artists during the time of impressionism in France. More than 50 works - oil on canvas, lithographs and watercolors - come from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

From neatly painted landscapes or seascapes by the "’Hudson River School" to experiments inspired by their meeting with impressionists during their stay in France, especially at Giverny, due to several American artists, the exhibition enlightens how American painters absorbed the bright colors and loose brush work of impressionism.

Later on, the practice of plein air painting by American artists moved on towards harsh realism that led to a new approach to painting at the turn of the 20th Century.
