Impressionism and the sea
Exhibition 2024 in Giverny France, Museum of Impressionisms
From March 29, 2024 to June 30, 2024
The musée des impressionnismes Giverny celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first impressionist exhibition in Paris, in 1874, by an art exhibition dedicated to the sea.
Thanks to the development of railways, the impressionist painters could explore the seaside of Normandy, Brittany or the French Riviera.
The exhibition features works by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Maufra, Auburtin, Jongkind, Signac, Courbet, Manet, Guillaumin, Gauguin...
It focuses on the relationship between the innovative artists of the late 19th Century and seascapes, through themes like cliffs, docks, beaches, storms, a taste for elsewhere, etc.
A special tribute is paid to Eugène Boudin, who was Monet's teacher and a talented navy and beach strollers painter. The exhibition showcases around thirty of his paintings and pastels.
